Santee Luxury Homes for Sale
This quaint town with a population of less than 1,000 residents is located on Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie in the Santee River Valley in Orangeburg County. While the region was once predominantly agricultural, it has recently become known for its golf courses and recreational destinations such as Lake Marion and Santee State Park. Small bedroom communities are noticeably replacing areas that were once just rural niches. While it may have a small population, it attracts over 100,000 visitors a year.
Santee is part of the Orangeburg County School District 3. Schools in the district include:
- Elloree Elementary School

Santee South Carolina State Park, a nearly 2,500-acre park, is the location for numerous fishing tournaments, lakefront campsites and cabins, and the Santee National Wildlife Refuge. This recreational paradise has been referred to as “one of the best kept secrets of the sunbelt”.
Lake Marion is one of the biggest draws of the area. This man-made hydroelectric reservoir is over 173 square miles in size and ranks as one of the fifty largest lakes in the country. It was created in the 1930s on the farmlands and marshes of the Santee River Valley. Today, Lake Marion is well-known for its trophy-quality game fish, especially small and large mouth bass.
Lake Moultrie is about half the size of Lake Marion, but is more open. It measures 14 miles across at its widest point. At the end of Lake Moultrie lies the 75 foot high Pinopolis Lock which will take boaters down to the Tailrace Canal, opening onto Cooper River and Charleston. The two lakes are joined by a 6.5 mile diversion canal. In addition, there are 29 campgrounds throughout the area.
The Town Hall Complex also offers residents a variety of activities. A new fitness trail has been installed which includes a half mile oval track with exercise stations. A large field area is perfect for biking, skating, skateboarding, and playing Frisbee with your dog. Public restrooms are available onsite.
Outdoor enthusiasts will also love the Palmetto Trail. Built in 1994, it is the state’s largest bicycle and pedestrian project. Once totally completed, it will stretch from the mountains to the sea. Six passages of trail run through the area and primitive camping is allowed at designated spots.
Located right off of Interstate-95, Santee is also known for its abundance of beautiful golf courses. Golf courses in the area include:

Santee is easily accessed by several major roads including Interstate 95, US 301, US 15, and SC 6. Interstate 95 connects Santee across a narrow arm of Lake Marion across a picturesque causeway.
